For watchers
of this space...
Eight months and still waiting for the verdict on my two books. I don't know
what's wrong, if I should contact the publishers and find out if they are at
all interested in them. This wringing of hands, this eternal anxiety, this
indecision, to say the least, is killing. An author invests a lot of time
and money on a book and to find it is not acceptable could be devastating,
one can simply stop writing altogether and go into a shell. Nothing of that
sort is happening to me, as I am still active literary boards, blogs and
writing comments and criticisms. This keeps the juices, sort of, flowing. As
Lokmanya Tilak said when he was convicted for sedition, "There are bigger
things that govern the destiny of man." He is a hero, no mean writer
himself, and I believe his words. Also my latest short story Seats, Red Spit
and Being Steve Smith featured in my short story blog
Unendingstories has got
good reactions from the boards.
Recently, I was invited to
attend the "Kritya International Poetry Festival" organized by Kritya in
Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala. Those two days in Kerala were like a peek into a
transient heaven. Like all heavens, it also passed in seconds. Pictures of
the festival can be viewed on my photoblog
Johnclicks.

A
family of writers....
I hail
from a family of writers in Malayalam, a language of South India. The
following three major writers in Malayalam are from my family. I am proud of
them and their achievements and give below a brief outline of their lives and
works. The name Tharakan is a title conferred on our family by an erstwhile
king of Travancore.
Rev.
George Mathan
Rev. George Mathan, my great-great-great uncle, was an Anglican priest who
was born on September 25, 1819. (Yes, he was writing contemporary of Mark Twain
in the USA and Charles Dickens in the UK.)
He wrote the first book of Malayalam grammar
called "Malayazhmayude Vyakaranam," which was published in 1863. His
other books include, "Satyavadakhedam," "Vedasamyukthi," and "Balabhyasam."
Here's what
the great Malayalam poet and litterateur Mahakavi Ulloor Parameshwaran Iyer
(who is considered Kerala's finest poets along with Kumaran Asan, and
Vallathol) had to
say about him:
"All in all,
George Mathan built a permanent framework for Malayalam literature and thus made
all Malayalis indebted to him, this fact is beyond dispute."
Rev. George
Mathan died on March 4, 1870 and a hospital, George Mathan Memorial
Hospital, Mallapally, Kerala, is named after him.
Puthencavu Mathan Tharakan
Puthencavu Mathan Tharakan, my great-uncle and Rev. George Mathan's great
nephew was born on September 5, 1903.
He was a
poet, a film lyricist, a novelist and principal of the Catholicate College in
Pathinamthitta, Kerala. Among his novels is "Madhubalika" set in
the Calcutta of
British colonial era.
He was
renowned for the lyrics he wrote for movie songs, and was also was a good singer
and public speaker. He was a
member of the Sahitya Akademi and won many awards for his writing.
K. M.
Tharakan
K. M. Tharakan, my uncle, was born on October 6, 1930 and was a writer,
critic and novelist. He was son of Puthencavu Mathan Tharakan. From 1979 to
1988 he was editor of the Malayala Manorama, Kerala's, and indeed
India's largest circulated weekly magazine.
Among his
books are: Utharadhunikathayum Mattum, Paschatya
Sahitya Tatwashastram, Malayala Novel Sahitya
Charitram, Anashwaranaya Uroob, Magdalamariam
Oru Muktigadha, Anugraheethanaya Bashir, Adhunika
Novel Darshanam, Adhunika Sahitya Darshanam, The
Poetic Act, and A Brief Survey of Malayalam Literature.
His novels
are: Avalanu Barya, Ninakai Mathram,
Ormakaluday Ratri, Atmavil Sugandham, Ennil
Aliyunna Dukham.
He died in
2003.
